The Three Speckled Hens Antiques & Old Stuff Show is THIS WEEKEND! Have you purchased your tickets yet? Be ready to shop ‘til you drop and pre-purchase your tickets online now. We have been busy prepping for the spring show, but we are never too busy for one final Dealer Spotlight! We sat down with Chris Schmaltz to learn more about him and his wife, Marla, and how they founded Schmaltzland Creations.
Chris, how did you first get into repurposing décor?
Well, my dad was the original tiki carver of the masks outside of the Tiki Room at Disneyland, as well as carvings at Epcot and Downtown Disney. When I was 10, I began working with my dad at his company Oceanic Arts in Whittier, California. We created tropical, nautical and rustic decor for movies, restaurants, businesses, party rentals, and projects all around the world.
Did those years working with your dad influence your work now at Schmaltzland Creations?
Oh, definitely! Those days working with my dad were a great foundation for my own creative endeavors and I continue to be inspired by him today as he is still carving into his 80’s.
What décor pieces are your favorite to work on?
I enjoy aesthetics and anything nostalgic. Besides Pastoring a small Church in Carlsbad you will find me repurposing old wood, and salvaging rusty metal to create furniture, décor, and more.
What kind of items do you search for?
I am passionate for all things salvaged…relics and souls. I’m always on the hunt for vintage
treasures, jumping at the chance to go ‘picking’ where I meet interesting, eclectic folks along the way. I love painting, murals, metal signs, canvas, and wood. I especially enjoy creating pieces that evoke a sense of the warmth, charm and simplicity, of days gone by.
Tell us your favorite part of working at Schmaltzland Creations.
We really love being out in the communities meeting all the fellow vendors, junk lovers, and collectors. The relationships we’ve made through ministry and markets are definitely the highlight for us!
Other than pickin’, what do you like to do in your spare time?
I’m a Pastor and a Picker but my favorite role is Papa. I love being on adventures with Marla and
our three girls…Landee, Cladee, and Tadee. We really like to get away exploring, camping, hiking, fishing, and just enjoying the great outdoors.
Don’t forget to stop by Schmaltzland Creations’ booth at the Antiques & Old Stuff Show on May 4 & 5! Follow them on Facebook and Instagram for their adventures leading up to the show. We can’t wait to see everyone at the Paso Robles Event Center this weekend!
