The countdown continues with only two weeks until our spring Antiques and Old Stuff Show! This week, our Dealer Spotlights is featuring Tom & Allison Schmidt from California Rediscovered, where repurposed and reclaimed is the premise of these beautiful creations!
How did the concept for California Rediscovered all begin?
California Rediscovered all began in 2011. While remodeling our home, we found a true passion for architectural antiques and reclaimed goods. We realized at that time that we could offer curated home decor with vintage and antique goods at affordable prices - we just had to do our homework and be willing to put some blood sweat and tears in repurposing and reclaiming old and discarded items. It was hard work, but we are so thankful and excited to we jumped at the opportunity!
What kind of items did you start repurposing?
Starting with the premise of reclaimed and repurposed, we began creating unique one-of-a-kind lighting that was always grounded with vintage, antiques and reclaimed junk in mind. From there, we moved to furniture (mostly desks), kitchen islands, shelving and coffee tables - all using found objects, often with a lean towards vintage industrial design.
When did you open your store, and what can we find there?
In 2018, we made up our minds to open a brick and mortar store in Santa Monica, CA. The store showcases a combination of our love of antique home goods and antique home decor, adding in the occasional offbeat oddity to keep it interesting. It really offers a nice blend of vintage and antique goods coupled with handmade home goods. Time sure goes by fast, but we are now closing in on our first year in business, and all is going well!
Why the Three Speckled Hens Antiques and Old Stuff Show?
Through all of our growth and regrowth, decisions made and shows done, we have always looked forward to the Three Speckled Hens Show for their awesome vendors, wonderful crew and amazing venue. This is a show we are very excited to participate in each year.
Do you get the whole family involved?
Yes! Our seven-year-old looks forward to the shows every year and now that we also have an eight-month-old, he will be “helping" us for the first time this May! We like to get our kids junking early and often. We think it is important for them to learn about antiques and understand our business - built on a love of all things old.
