In this week’s Dealer Spotlight, we are sitting down with Didi Reynoso of Golden Retriever Vintage. Didi shares how she, her husband David, and their golden retriever Ollie they fell in love with the antiquing business and give us insight into the inspiration behind their work.
How did the name “Golden Retriever Vintage” come to be?
Well, my husband David, our dog Ollie, and I hunt for treasures that have value but are often overlooked or at the end of their current life. Often times we’re out “Indiana Jonesing” through barns, garages, attics, and other dusty, spider webby areas up and down the Central Coast of California. It seemed perfect to name our business after the two things we care about most: our amazing pup and antiquing!
Where did your love for antiques originate?
Collecting runs in the family for me. My father was an avid coin and stamp collector that turned his passion into a business. My parents owned a gift and collectibles shop as well as a Western art gallery for over 30 years. David's uncle also had an antiques shop, but collecting for my husband started even earlier. His parents laugh now at the memory of him returning home from kindergarten in Santa Maria with pockets full of rocks, rubber bands, paper clips, bottle caps, you name it!
How did your passion lead to the antiques business you have today?
We both have a background in retail. David was an executive for a leading retailer for over 20 years. Who am I kidding, though? With our love for treasure hunting and antiquing, our home just started filling up with a ton of great vintage finds to the point we didn’t know where to put it all! We figured we'd better share some of our treasures or stop collecting. That’s what started it! We knew we would never stop collecting, so we started Golden Retriever Vintage. Now, our little vintage business has grown and we are established at two antiques markets: A Piece of the Past Antique & Vintage Mall in Solvang and Déjà vu Antique Mall in Orcutt.
How would you describe your style?
We definitely have a focus on eclectic vintage pieces. We love the look of old things used in a new way. Vintage items can add such personality to a home. We love unique glassware and funky, quirky items that speak to us. We also love industrial, repurposed furnishings and farm tables that need a second life. We are really known for farm tables in all sizes, shapes, and styles. It may be your grandma’s stuff, but it’s not stuffy!
What unique items can we expect to see at the Three Speckled Hens Show this fall?
That’s tough to say! We both have our weaknesses— I love glassware - particularly fun, unique barware that makes a statement. David can't say no to rustic metal and wood boxes that lend to the vintage atmosphere. Since we both buy and share what we love, our space is a direct reflection of the combination of our collections. We will definitely have some wooden art, furniture, tables, accessory pieces with personality, and hopefully things you haven't seen before, and may not again!
