Did you catch our Backyard Paradise exhibit during the California Mid-State Fair at the end of July? We were thrilled for the opportunity to promote our fall Antiques and Old Stuff Show and inspire fairgoers with a live-action display of our favorite antiques-inspired backyard activities, complete with three live speckled hens!
With great delight, we were invited by the Paso Robles Event Center to set up an exhibit during the Fair in an area called Farm Alley, which sits between the arts and agricultural pavilions filled with phenomenal displays and local competition winners. When the time came to scope out our booth space a few weeks prior to the Fair, we were shocked! Sixty-five feet long by eighteen feet deep! We knew there was work to be done to fill this large space, but we were certain this corner of Farm Alley was meant for the Three Speckled Hens when we caught sight of the large chicken house installed at one end!
With our summer vacations already planned and production for our next show in full swing, we knew this exhibit had to have minimal coordination and be easy to install. So, we did what the Hens do best! We gathered all of the rusty, repurposed, vintage decor from our own backyards and hauled them to the Paso Robles Event Center to create vignettes of our favorite summertime backyard activities.
The first vignette was a country backyard display complete with chicken house, children’s vintage play equipment, casual seating and lots of planted farm inspirations. We love gardening during the warm summer months and watching our grandchildren play in the yard so this scene was a must. We brought flowers and succulents planted in old coffee pots, chicken feeders, buckets and wash tubs. The cherry on top was Susi’s beautiful (and live) three speckled hens that she relocated to the chicken house! How’s that for authenticity?
The second vignette was a vintage camping scene. All of the Hens and our families love to explore the great outdoors and spend quality time together around the campfire. We set the stage with old army cots, a fire pit, and wash stands filled with beverages. And of course, we couldn’t leave out the vintage bar—wine is a great accompaniment to s’mores around the campfire! Our final touches on this vignette consisted of old lanterns and stacked firewood.
For our final vignette, we set up a vintage lounge for fancier outdoor occasions. You never know when you will have an Impromptu Dinner Party! Faded vintage rugs layered for the casual chic look, a vintage white settee, side chairs with old stacked tables and the pièce de résistance, a beautiful crystal chandelier. To add pops of color, we draped three vintage American flags on the back wall. A weathered hutch held a collection of old books, candlesticks and pottery. Flowering plants and eucalyptus branches arranged in weathered containers finished off the scene.
