For our final Dealer Spotlight before the big weekend, we are interviewing Shana Wood and Kellie Pogue of Wood’s Antiques. The two share how their antiquing fates aligned and where they discover some of their most unique treasures. Be sure to stop by their booth at our fall show next weekend, October 1-2! They will be bringing a variety of items, from dainty kitchen decor to your more rugged “mantiques.” Get your tickets online now at ThreeSpeckledHens.com or head to our Facebook page for a chance to win a pair of Early Bird Admission tickets!
Where did your passion for antiques originate?
Shana: I have been interested in antiques my entire life. My love of antiques came from my Grandma Ruby Bishop. She would take me to yard sales and flea markets and taught me many things about the trade.
Kellie: I have also always had a passion for antiques. My husband and I are collectors of antique silver bits, bridles, spurs, saddles and other absolutely amazing Western items.
How did Wood’s Antiques come to be? Is this a fulltime gig?
Shana: After passing up so many amazing things at yard sales that I didn't need for myself, I decided to become a dealer about 6 years ago and have never been happier or had so much fun! I do still work part time as an ultrasound technician at a hospital. I also rent a couple of spaces in Mill Creek Antique Mall in Bakersfield. With my remaining time, we are able to do about three shows per year.
It seems as though the two of you have been lifelong friends. How did you meet?
Shana: About two years in to my antiques business, I met Kellie. She boarded her horse at the same facility as I did and helped care for my horse. We soon learned that we shared a love for antiques too!
Kellie: Shana took me on some whirlwind Saturday morning yard sale trips. I was hooked after that and never looked back. We have become best friends and have such a good time hitting the yard sales together just about every weekend.
How would you describe the differences in your styles?
Kellie: I have always had an eye for anything Western as well as classy high-end items.
Shana: I personally love and will buy anything old and interesting because I know someone else will like it too!
What is the most exciting thing about shopping for that new piece?
Shana: We are almost giddy with excitement when we drive up to a yard sale that looks good!
Kellie: I get most excited when I discover an old box underneath a table at a yard sale. I always know that I will find my next treasure there, and I always do!
Where do you find all of your unique items for the shows you attend?
Shana: Other than our obvious love of yard sales, I really enjoy going on long antique hunting trips! I almost always turn a family vacation with my husband, daughter and son into a shopping trip for our next show. We recently attended a large sale in Kentucky and Ohio and will be bringing some of our favorite finds to the fall show.
Kellie: For the past five years, Shana and her husband have brought back great finds from the Hwy 127 Longest Yard Sale that stretches from Alabama to Michigan. Next year, I am definitely tagging along and bringing a large truck to haul our amazing finds back in! We also visited the Brimfield Antiques Show in Massachusetts last May and will be bringing some of those great finds to the Three Speckled Hens too!
Any parting words?
Shana: We are so happy to be a part of the fall show! We hunt for treasures all year to sell at the Three Speckled Hens.
Kellie: Stop by and visit us at the show. We will be in booth 313 and 314. You can't miss us because we are both blond, extremely tall and will be showcasing a massive and eclectic array of antiques. You never know what you will find in our booth!
