For our third Dealer Spotlight we are interviewing Donna Lee of Hidden Gate Antiques in Cambria. Hidden Gate Antiques is an outgrowth of a lifetime appreciation for the history of people. They offer a charming collection of early 1800s-1900s antiques with an emphasis on American primitives. We chatted with Donna to learn more about how this beloved little shop came to be and what draws her to antiquing.
When did the doors first open on Hidden Gate Antiques?
Hidden Gate opened its doors just over six years ago in a tiny shop no bigger than a large walk-in closet. For the past four years Hidden Gate has been located in the little blue cottage (circa 1876) behind the Cambria Historical Museum.
Tell us what shoppers might find when they visit Hidden Gate Antiques.
The charming little blue cottage is the perfect home for the items I offer. My shop is truly a step back in history. Having been a part of the antiquing world since I was a child and now a dealer for over 20 years, I have discovered many unique and priceless pieces along the way. I am called to the primitive style but love any individual expression from any genre.
What draws you to antiques?
The heart you feel in a handmade antique is so unique in today’s mass-produced throwaway society. There is no better feeling than to fill your home with pieces that have such history and craftsmanship.
Do you have any advice for home decorators?
It is the unique thought and combination that is important when considering décor for your home. Our homes should be an expression of us; a collection of what talks to us. The great mix of styles, periods and materials offered through antiques is only limited by your own creative imagination. That type of stylistic freedom is the best, isn’t it?
We love having the freedom to mix and match styles and genres. Do you have a favorite style?
Country is definitely my favorite! However, I also look for a mix of Victorian, French, industrial and garden décor to blend together, always with a splash of whimsy to add a bit of fun!
